The place behind the scent
Since time immemorial, the lands now protected as Mount Rainier National Park have been the ancestral homelands of Tribes including the Nisqually, Puyallup, Muckleshoot, Cowlitz, Squaxin Island, and Yakama, among others. The people who remain connected to and care for this sacred place. The mountain is also known by Indigenous names, including Tahoma/Tacoma, reflecting its deep cultural significance.
Established in 1899 as the nation’s fifth National Park, Rainier rises to 14,410 feet—the highest peak in Washington and the Cascade Range. It’s an active volcano and the most glaciated peak in the contiguous U.S., with 28 major glaciers and five major rivers that begin on its flanks.
From wildflower-loaded meadows at Paradise to the legendary 93-mile Wonderland Trail encircling the mountain, there’s something here for everyone-waterfalls, lakes, forest, and jaw-dropping views.
And for the big-adventure crowd: roughly 10,000–11,000 climbers attempt the summit each year, most via routes from Camp Muir. Paradise Inn has welcomed visitors since 1917, adding a little historic lodge magic. And keep your eyes open! Elk, deer, black bears, marmots, and Steller’s jays are all part of the Rainier experience.
