The place behind the scent
Established in 1938, Olympic National Park protects nearly a million acres on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. It's where you can stand in a temperate rainforest in the morning and watch waves crash on wild coastline that same afternoon. The park includes 73 miles of wilderness coast, over 3,000 miles of rivers and streams, and 32 named glaciers, with glacier-capped peaks rising to Mount Olympus (7,980’ / 2,432 m).
And then there’s the rainforest: places like the Hoh (with an average of 12–14 feet of rain annually) and Quinault, where moss and ferns thrive, and giant western hemlock, Douglas fir, and Sitka spruce create that unmistakable green cathedral feeling. If you’ve ever walked the Hoh’s Hall of Mosses, driven past Lake Crescent, or watched the light change at Ruby Beach or Kalaloch, you know: Olympic is pure, misty magic.
Wildlife is part of the Olympic magic too. Roosevelt elk are the park’s headline act, and you may also spot black bears, river otters, bald eagles, and tidepool life along the coast. The park is also home to unique residents like the Olympic marmot and the Olympic torrent salamander, found in this region’s lush, wet ecosystems.
