The place behind the scent

Mount Rainier is the highest peak in the Cascade Range at 14,410 ft (4,392 m). A massive, glacier-covered stratovolcano that dominates the horizon and earns its nickname, “the Mountain.”

Rainier is still considered an active volcano; the USGS notes its most recent eruption was about 1,000 years ago. The land administered as Mount Rainier National Park has been since time immemorial the ancestral homeland of the Cowlitz, Muckleshoot, Nisqually, Puyallup, Squaxin Island, Yakama, and Coast Salish people, who remain dedicated caretakers of this land. Mount Rainier National Park sees about 2.5 million recreation visits a year.
