The place behind the scent

Rattlesnake Lake and the Rattlesnake Ledge trail sit right on the edge of the Cedar River watershed within the Snoqualmie Tribe’s ancestral lands. The Snoqualmie Tribe shares the traditional Lushootseed place name for the ridge itself known as daʔšə dabš (Rattlesnake Ridge). This is a beloved, heavily recreated place with big views, big sky, and that end-of-day glow that makes you linger.

And the name of Rattlesnake? One widely shared story connects it to an historic camas prairie that was once here. When dried, seed pods rattled in the wind and early newcomers mistook the sound for rattlesnakes (there aren’t rattlesnakes west of the Cascades). Rattlesnake Sunset was the very first candle I ever made, inspired by those late hikes and lake moments when the light turns warm and everything feels a little softer.
