The place behind the scent
Known in Lushootseed as sdukʷalbixʷ stuləkʷ, the Snoqualmie River is a living river that shapes the Snoqualmie Valley. Fed by snowmelt as the North, Middle, and South Forks all come together near the Three Forks area before flowing on as one. Along its path it reaches Snoqualmie Falls, a sacred site for the Snoqualmie Indian Tribe, with the Falls known in Lushootseed as šəqaʔɫdaɫ (“upper lip”) and sqʷədʔ (the place “under” where the water plunges). The Falls and surrounding lands are recognized as a Traditional Cultural Property, and the area holds deep cultural meaning and connection to ancestry. From there, the river continues north to join the Skykomish River, forming the Snohomish River, which flows onward into Puget Sound.
Whether you’re floating, rafting, picnicking, or simply walking beside the water, this river has a way of settling the nervous system-steady, moving, and full of quiet earth energy.
In early 2026, the Snoqualmie Indian Tribal Council designated the Snoqualmie River as a Cultural Waterway in order to ensure the proper regulation and management of the River to protect and preserve for years to come.
