The place behind the scent

First protected in 1864 and established as Yosemite National Park in 1890, Yosemite is one of America’s original wonders. Where a glacier-carved valley opens into towering walls of granite and waterfalls that feel almost unreal. In Yosemite Valley, iconic formations like Half Dome and El Capitan rise from the valley floor and have become symbols of the entire National Park system with the massive, sun-warmed stone making you feel wonderfully small. Half Dome and El Cap draw climbers from around the world, especially El Cap’s legendary route, The Nose, one of the most famous big-wall climbs on Earth.

And then there are the giants: ancient giant sequoias, including the Mariposa Grove, the park’s largest sequoia grove with 500+ mature trees. Yosemite is also very much alive with wildlife. You might spot mule deer in the meadows, and the park is famously home to black bears (plus hundreds of other species across its many habitats).
